Senior year can be a stressful time for teenagers. Preparing for graduation, maintaining grades, and applying to colleges can be a lot of responsibility. For some students, the process of applying to colleges is unfamiliar and confusing. Having a supportive adult to help with these tasks can be extremely helpful.
David Scott is a college & career readiness coach with the organization Everybody Counts, and he is currently stationed at Great Crossing High School. Everybody Counts is a program that exists inside of the larger Team Kentucky initiative, and it provides support for students interested in earning a college degree. Scott, along with his assistant Elise Lindsay help students complete their Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), apply to colleges & scholarships, and send transcripts.
Scott also assists Great Crossing High School by making sure all students are post secondary ready. He provides services to seniors and graduating juniors. Those who plan to attend college and those would prepare to take a different path. He guides students on what they need to do to prepare for college and offers them advice on the best decision. He also helps students apply for jobs, build resumes, and connect with potential employers.
Scott said, “I want to make sure students have the information they need to make informed decisions about their future. College is expensive, and I want students to know all of their options and the financial responsibilities that come with those choices.”
Many students have already worked with Scott during the 2024-2025 school year and have appreciated his directness. He is honest and straightforward about what life will be like in the years after graduating high school. Lily Thompson said “Scott has helped me with my confidence in making my own decisions. He did not sugar coat anything about the application process and how things would work in the future.”
English teacher Annette Manlief has taught seniors for many years, and she is thrilled that her seniors have more support for their transition into college or the workforce. Manlief said, “Mr. Scott has been a wonderful addition to our school this year. He has been more than willing to come into my classes to discuss information students need for transitioning to college next year. He also is incredibly respectful regarding my class time, working his appointments around when I can send students. Students return from their visits with him saying how incredibly helpful he has been. I appreciate that he can sit down one on one and help students with college applications or FAFSA. This is the first time in my career that a service of this kind has been provided, and I see firsthand the effects it’s having.
Scott and Lindsay are open to helping any student in need. On March 11th, Scott will be available to meet with seniors and families that need help with the FAFSA at the Scott County Public Library from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm. Appointments are not necessary on this day.
Students are welcome to stop by their office on the GCHS campus, which is located in room 305. They can also schedule an appointment with them through the QR codes that are located throughout senior English classes.
