At GCHS, when the new school year begins, many students have the opportunity to select the classes they want to take. At GCHS, we offer a variety of electives to help students discover their interests or explore potential career paths. The real question is why students pick the classes they are interested in and how these classes will benefit them during the year.
GCHS offers a wide range of electives for students to choose from. In addition to core content area electives, there are options such as journalism, culinary arts, child development, technology classes, welding, agriculture courses, dual credit programs, art, band, and many more. Students have plenty of opportunities to explore their interests.
Many students choose their elective courses hoping to gain some information about a possible career they may want after high school. Senior Sherlyn Perez chose Principles of Health for an elective this year.
Perez said ‘’Most of my favorite classes are science-based- but my favorite one is Principles of Health Science because I enjoy everything we learn, and I also enjoy working with people I like. I chose the classes I have mainly, because I want to go into the healthcare field after I graduate from high school.’’ Courses that connect to a career, like Sherlyn’s Principles of Health class, include biology, chemistry, astronomy, and physics are other options available at GCHS that connect to a career course.
Senior Angelica Rojas chose her electives based on activities that she already enjoys doing the most. Rojas said ‘’I’m in co-op, so I don’t have many classes, only English 4, Math concepts, Film studies, Study Hall, and Adv strength/conditioning. I leave during the seminar hour. I like anything that involves workouts, such as the gym or going to the field house, because I pretty much work out most of the time, and it’s something I enjoy doing to stay fit. I need to take some classes to graduate high school, as I chose courses that I wanted to try and enjoy. I prefer tasks that aren’t too difficult.’’
Sophomore Henry Gonzalez selected his classes based on his favorite sport: football. Gonzalez said, ‘’I like anything I enjoy doing, and I am really glad to have the opportunity to take any classes that involve sports or what I like doing, mostly because I’m a football player. My choice of classes is based on my interests or requirements until my senior year. I select classes based on the topics, whether I am assigned to them or just want to try them out. I like the people and teachers in this subject. The topic is the only tricky part because there are some difficult concepts I didn’t understand, even with help.’’
