Math skills are necessary in life.   They are needed to stick with a budget at the grocery store, having math skills can be a requirement for a job, and while they are important, many students don’t love math class. Having an awesome math teacher can make all the difference in learning what is needed for this subject area.

Heidi Little, an algebra teacher, is very determined to share her understanding of math with her students at Great Crossing High School.  Little has high energy at the beginning of every class she teaches, and she always loves helping out students with math.

She’s very compassionate about teaching, also cares very much for her students, she moves at a good pace so everyone knows what’s going on with a lesson.

Little explained how she was led to the classroom. “I actually didn’t like math till I was a senior in high school and I took pre-calculus. For some reason, it started to make sense then. I thought it was just so interesting, and I wanted to learn more about it.”

Little graduated from EKU armed with the skills and tips needed to teach high school students that she learned from her professors.

While Little hopes to help others make sense of math, it’s the ability to help others as a teacher that makes her work worthwhile. She stated, “When I get to work with a student, I see when they finally get to understand what they’ve been having trouble with. I think that moment when it finally clicks is part of what makes the job worth it. I really feel like I helped out at that point.”

Freshman Mason Flynt, is a member of Little’s third period algebra I class.   Flynt explained why he likes Little’s teaching style. “When she teaches, she teaches at a slow pace and breaks it down so everyone can better understand.”

Flynt also appreciates her personality.  “She’s always nice, very joking with her students. Her class is much more fun than others. She’s very compassionate about teaching, also cares very much for her students, she moves at a good pace so everyone knows what’s going on with a lesson. ”

Freshman Gabe Wise is also one of Little’s algebra students. “She doesn’t hesitate to help any student if  they are stuck on something. She really likes helping out her students. She is very fun and jokes around during class,” he said.

Teachers have an impact on their students by the way they teach their students and that can leave an imprint on the students memory of the subject that they have learned. Little impact on her students comes from being a caring individual that makes learning enjoyable.
