Students can choose to spend part of their summer working a job. Popular ones include lifeguarding, working at a restaurant or retail.

Many students have jobs year round, but some don’t have time during the year because of school, sports, family and even transportation. Eventually school ends, and what is there to do? Students could hang out with friends and go on vacation, but what about the time in between? A summer job would be a good way to spend the summer.

Having a job during the summer can be extremely beneficial for most students. Thinking ahead to students’ future plans, they can choose to save money for education. Choosing to save a portion of the hard earned money students collect from one’s summer job is always a good decision. Lexi Shepherd, a senior at Great Crossing High School explained, “While having a summer job, I can save up money for college and my future. It’s honestly nice to know I’ll have money put back for anything I might need like books, supplies and even for tuition.”

My job has taught me about work ethic and responsibility that is my own. I’ve learned how to help customers in different situations and deal with real world problems to the best of my ability.

— Lexie Shepherd, GCHS senior

Access to money can be a safety net, a way to save up for large purchases students may want or need, or a way to have money to go out with friends. Levi Gillispie, a senior at Great Crossing, explained his reason for having a summer job.  “Usually during the school year, I can’t save a lot of money, because I’m spending money on gas to go to school and school events, but during the summer I have free time.  So I work and save up the money I made over the summer for new school supplies.”

Jay Jay Smith, a sophomore, said,  “During the summer, I don’t really travel much, so having a job during the summer is an easy way for me to make money for things I want and need.”

Summer jobs are time consuming, and the payoff is greater than just the amount deposited into the bank. Shepherd feels that her job at Texas Roadhouse has taught her so much. “My job has taught me about work ethic and responsibility that is my own. I’ve learned how to help customers in different situations and deal with real world problems to the best of my ability.”

Not only are jobs beneficial for work ethic, but it can help students obtain socialization skills  and meet new people. Lexi Shepherd said “I met some of my best friends at work.”

So having a job during the summer can be great for those that want to jump into the working world without worrying about the stresses of work and school. It helps students experience real life situations and prepare for adulthood.
