Having a good teacher can benefit students in many ways. It could be that they trust that teacher with delicate information, have someone to talk to or joke with in class, and perhaps even make memories that will last a lifetime. Having a strong bond with a teacher can make going to high school worthwhile and can get students through a hard time in their life.

Cedric Jude is a history teacher at Great Crossing High School who connects well with his students.  Jude is known to be very kind, loves to talk to students, and he shows respect for them.  He demonstrates this through simple actions such as taking time out of his day to ask them what’s wrong.

He understands the students aren’t all going to learn the same, and he adapts to that. He’s not just about rules in his classroom. He does something that makes you comfortable and is willing to work with you to help you.

Caitlin Covington, a sophomore, is a history student of Jude’s.  Covington shared how much Jude shows he cares for his students. “I came in one day just not having it. It was a bad day, and he asked what was going on. He generally cared, like he really did want to know what was going on.”

Covington also appreciates Jude’s style of teaching and felt at ease in his class. “He understands the students aren’t all going to learn the same, and he adapts to that. He’s not just about rules in his classroom. He does something that makes you comfortable and is willing to work with you to help you.”  Positive relationships inside the classroom helps boost academic performance for students.

Jude is one of the younger teachers at GCHS.  At 25, he is only a few years older than his students.  He believes this helps him better communicate and bond with his students. He explained that it’s easier to communicate and bond with students. “It’s different when you have a teacher that’s 40 and then a teacher that’s 25”. Being closer in age to his students means that Jude shares similar interests with them in terms of television and music, which makes him relatable.

Jude appreciates how much students can trust him, even if he is only in the student’s life for a short period of time. “Last year when I was subbing in middle school, this kid came up to me, and he told me a secret and he hadn’t told anyone else that, except for another teacher. I was just a sub and that just made me so happy.  I was in that kid’s life for a month and he felt comfortable telling me. It makes me happy, because that’s what I’m here for.”

Besides working with students in the classroom, Jude also works with students as the e-sports team coach.    Aaron Copperthite, a member of the team, enjoyed having Jude as his coach. “He’s good at his job, and he knows how to set up the games.  He also speaks to us with respect.  I think Mr Jude is a very cool person, someone that you can talk to, he’s nice, his kind .  I haven’t had his class yet, but I think it will be interesting.”

Jude’s experience with e-sports made him interested in coaching the students.  “I was coach and captain of the uk’s esports team, and when the other coach left abruptly I expressed my interest. I also love competitive games, which was the reason I honestly wanted to do esports.”
